About the course

What are the requirements for a Type Rating Instructor?

To comply with EASA regulations as stated in (FCL.905.TRI), an applicant for an initial TRI certificate shall:

(a) hold a CPL, MPL or ATPL for the applicable aircraft category in which flight instruction is to be given

  • Completed at least 1500 hours flight time as a pilot of a multi-pilot aircraft
  • Completed within the 12 months preceding the application at least 30 route sectors, including take-offs and landings as pilot in command or co-pilot on the applicable aircraft type he/she will instruct, of which not more than 15 sectors may be completed in a flight simulator.

 

How do I become a Type Rating Instructor?

To become a TRI or SFI, you must gain adequate training in teaching and learning processes, flight and synthetic flight instruction.

A TRI training course shall include:

(1) At least 25 hours of teaching and learning;

(2) 10 hours of technical training related to the applicable aircraft type, including revision of technical knowledge, the preparation of lesson plans and the development of classroom/simulator instructional skills;

(3) 5 hours of flight instruction for single-pilot aircraft or 10 hours for multi-pilot aircraft on the applicable aircraft type or an FFS representing that type.

(4) Additional training when instructional privileges are sought in accordance with FCL.905.TRI (b)(4), (c)(1) or (c)(2).

NaviMinds does not offer the simulator training needed for issuing SFI/TRI licenses – we only run the theoretical part. The teaching and learning part of the course shall be completed first and may be completed separately from the other parts of the course at a different ATO.

What does EASA require?

“Training should be both theoretical and practical. Practical elements should include the development of specific instructor skills, particularly in the area of teaching and assessing threat and error management and CRM.”

How many hours is required for a TRI or SFI course?

The requirement for a TRI (or SFI) is a 25-hour course in Teaching and Learning

What is the certification after completed Teaching and Learning course?

To qualify as an SFI/TRI, you must complete at least 25 hours of teaching and learning. Our Teaching and Learning course for SFI/TRI courses fully complies with all EASA requirements, and a certificate reflecting the EASA syllabus will be issued upon completion.

Anne’s career began as a Cabin Attendant in 1987. She became a Flight Instructor in 1994 and later served as a First Officer at Maersk Air and Sterling Airlines. Anne also served as a Simulator Flight Instructor and was Captain on the 737 fleet at Primera Air A/S. She also held the positions of Deputy Safety Officer and Chief of Human Factors Training.
