What are the EASA requirements of a CRM trainer?

To achieve CRM instructor certification, EASA requires a flight crew CRM trainer to receive Human Performance and Limitations training.

“A flight crew CRM trainer should:

(i) have adequate knowledge of human performance and limitations (HPL), whilst:

(A) having obtained a commercial pilot license in accordance with Commission Regulation (EU) No 1178/2022; or

(B) having followed a theoretical HPL course covering the whole syllabus of the HPL examination.”

–                    EASA AMC2. ORO.FC.146

Who needs to attend a HPL course?

EASA AMC1 ORO.FC.115 requires a CRM trainer to receive Human Performance and Limitations (HPL) instruction. While flight crew usually fulfil this requirement by the HPL examination in ATPL training, it is usually the opposite for cabin crew.

A Human Performance and Limitations course is relevant for cabin crew who are or will be CRM trainers to provide the necessary understanding of HPL and fulfil the EASA requirement for CRM trainers. The course is also highly suitable for flight deck crew who will be CRM trainers but have not completed an HPL examination or require HPL refresher training.

What is HPL in aviation?

Human Performance and Limitations (HPL) is a critical aspect of aviation safety and refers to the study of how human capabilities and limitations can impact aviation operations.

The topics dealt with in an HPL course include but are not limited to, physiological limitations (vision, hearing, endurance, and the effect of altitude on the body), cognitive limitations, psychological factors, fatigue management, and automation and human-machine interaction.
